CRIMESTOPPERS

Police officers often rely on outside information in their fight against crime. “CrimeStoppers” is a program involving the public, the media, and the police. The program began in 1989 and was coordinated by Lt. Howard Clevenger. Television stations relate the facts of a crime in an area and anonymous callers with information are given a number to collect a cash reward if the information leads to an arrest. Fifteen felony arrests and over $25,000 of stolen property were recovered during the first few months of the ongoing program. In 1990, a CrimeStopper’s tip led detectives to the arrest of a suspect in a two-year-old murder.
