OFFICER GEORGE BRANDEL

During the later part of his 25-year career, George Brandel served as the turnkey-jail officer, the “keeper of the keys.” Though the jail couldn’t be considered escape proof, he never lost a prisoner. The problem came in keeping track of the one huge set of keys for the jail. One afternoon after looking for almost an hour Officer Brandel confessed to the Captain he had lost the keys. Brandel back tracked through his day to the point of putting a prisoner in a patrol car to be taken to Battle Creek. Brandel telephoned the officer in Battle Creek who then did a complete search of the car. The keys were found on the running board of the police car transporting the prisoner. When the officer returned, a second set of keys was made.
