CHAPLAIN PROGRAM

Chaplains began to serve at the first Common Council meetings in 1859 and continued as Lansing grew. They were soon aware of the stressful work of police officers. Father Charles Keating chancellor of St. Mary’s, and Reverend George Selway of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, received honorary appointments as chaplains for the police department in 1950. Others have followed in their willingness to volunteer and serve on a 24-hour basis, Monsignor James Murray, now Bishop of the Diocese of Kalamazoo, willingly served Lansing police officers for over twenty-five years. Reverend Earl Van Sipe of Pennway Church of God, served for ten years.  Dr. Clyde Carnegie retired principal of Sexton High School, and many others, continue an important service to the personnel of the Lansing Police Department.
