CHIEF COLE RESIGNS One of the minor duties of Chief Cole was overseeing the selling of pet licenses at the police desk. The forms were signed by the chief and sold by his designee and the money tossed in a drawer. At the end of the year an audit revealed $200 of pet fees missing. Although Chief Cole was exonerated from any wrongdoing, he felt his trust had been violated and resigned January 1, 1918. Capt. LeRoy Potter, known for his leadership skills, sat as Acting Chief during a three-month extensive search for a new chief that included legislators, county and local officials, and prominent businessmen.
