CHIEF GLEASON RETIRES

During his eleven years as Chief, Richard A. Gleason organized programs to better serve the citizens of Lansing and create a safe environment for police officers. A few of these include: Sting Operations-arrest of those selling stolen properties; appointed an Internal Affairs Officer to set a consistent and standard procedure relating to discipline through an impartial investigation; began affirmative action programs required by the City Charter; led the department through an attack of the Blue-Flu on July 4, 1980 when 94 of 106 non-supervisory officers called in sick; created a Post Trauma Team for LPD officers; put the first community policing officer on the street, and saw the organization of the K-9 unit. As a young officer, Gleason was tagged with the nickname, “The Grump.” He said, “I guessed I earned that.” But when the chief wrote a letter of encouragement and support to his troops and signed it “The Grump,” the police officers knew it came from his heart.
