COMMUNICATION CENTER

The radio/dispatch center provides the first line of communication between the public and the police officer in the field. In 1967, a computer information bank known as the LEIN-Law Enforcement Information Network-provided LPD access to NCIC-National Crime Information Center. Patrol cars were equipped with multiple channel radios and new equipment in the communication center recorded transmissions on all frequencies on a 24-hour magnetic tape. The tapes are stored and provide a record of calls received. A 10-code shortened and clarified radio transmissions. For example: a 10-4 acknowledged a call received from the radio dispatcher.

In 1977, a 911 Computer Aided Dispatch System was implemented and provided automatic logging and prioritizing of calls. The continuous updating of equipment, computers, and programs for the communication center and patrol cars is essential and ongoing. In the 1990s, an Automated Fingerprint Investigative Search (AFIS) was added.
