CRIMINAL LAW / CIVIL LAW

Sworn police officers enforce Criminal Law; actions that are harmful to society and include such crimes as murder, rape and robbery. Criminal law is punitive and is frequently legislated into a penal code or statute that clearly defines the function of a peace officer and designates law enforcement agencies. Civil law is noncriminal. Civil law regulates conflicts between people such as contracts, property and payment for personal injury, but does not usually involve police officers.
