THE DEPRESSION A worldwide business slump in the late 1920s affected every city of the United States. Many cities experienced high unemployment and financial problems. Lansing police officers were required to reside in the city to be on the city tax rolls. They received 25% of their $1800 yearly salary in script, and were required to pay a small percent to the newly created welfare fund. FDR’s New Deal Programs, the WPA and PWA, provided funding and employment, and the National Recovery Act of 1933 provided monies for new highway construction that slowly brought relief. By 1938, Lansing was liquidating its outstanding debts. A power plant was built on Ottawa St. a water conditioning plant on Cedar St., and a farmer’s market on Shiawassee Street. |
