AN OFFICER’S DILEMMA Lansing Police officers are trained to patrol their assigned district with a watchful eye and maintain the safety and peace of that area during their shift. At times this can take them from routine mundane duties to life threatening situations. In the 1960s, before the days of protective vests, a four-year veteran officer, while on patrol at 4:00 am, attempted to stop an apparently intoxicated male driver. The driver pulled into a driveway on N. Pennsylvania, apparently his home, and attempted to run into the house. The officer had pulled his car in behind the man and as he attempted to subdue the man, a female teenager ran out of the house, and swung at the officer with an ice pick. While the officer was calling for backup on his radio, the man shook loose from the officer and ran into the house. The officer followed the man through the front door and as he attempted to place him under arrest, a young boy ran upstairs. As the policeman looked to the top of the stairs, he heard a “click,” and saw the boy standing there pointing a .22 caliber rifle at him. The officer yelled at the boy to put the gun down as he took the man out the front door. The female teenager with the ice pick again began to stab at the officer, just as other Lansing police officers arrived at the scene. The man, the teenager, and the young boy were subdued and taken to the police station. This sequence of events occurred in a span of five to six minutes. Filling out reports, booking the man, and securing the children took over two hours. Later, the man went to jail and the children were petitioned to probate court. The officer returned to patrol duty.
