MAC J. DONNELLY, JR

Silently, as Cathedral bells tolled, an officer bellowed, “Present Arms,” and rows of police officers saluted the flag draped coffin of fallen officer Mac J. Donnelly, Jr. Mac was killed in the line of duty of June 16, 1977, during a successful attempt to save the lives of four civilians taken hostage during a bank robbery. Officer Donnelly, an eight-year veteran of LPD, was survived by his wife Margaret and five children, and was also a son, a brother, a husband, a father, a friend, and a remarkably good person. The Lansing Police firearms range is dedicated as “The Mac J. Donnelly, Jr. Complex.” As a result of Mac’s death, the Lansing City Council authorized the purchase of ballistic vests for all LPD officers.
