FIRST FEMALE PATROL OFFICER – NANCY COCHRAN SMALL

In November 1973 Nancy Cochran Small set a precedent when she became the first sworn female LPD officer assigned to the patrol division, a job previously carried out by male officers. A graduate of MSU, Cochran previously served as a Sky Marshal and Customs Inspector. Officer Cochran joined her brothers Bill and James as sworn officers of LPD. She was first required to wear culottes and a ribbon tie on her uniform shirt. Finding the attire inadequate to perform her duties, she was allowed to wear a regulation uniform. She was promoted to Sergeant in 1987.
