HELICOPTER UNIT

A grant awarded to LPD by the Michigan Criminal Justice Program allowed Air 80, a helicopter patrol unit, to make its maiden flight in June 1974. Goals of the program included an attempt to reduce Part I crimes, improve police patrol, increase the apprehension rate of crimes-in-progress, and provide citizens a feeling of security. The two-person Hughes helicopter was equipped with searchlights, a 12-channel radio, siren, public address system, and flashing red lights. After illuminating an area, the aerial observer described the scene to ground units, such as a suspect hiding in a bush.  Sgt. Greg Braun, unit commander from 1984 -1990, stated that the craft proved to be an excellent crime-fighting tool and provided additional safety for the police officers and citizens. Budget reductions forced the grounding of the helicopter in June 1991.
