LPD PISTOL TEAM In 1932 five LPD officers formed a pistol team. They practiced their shooting skills at Hunter’s Gravel Pit using tin cans as targets. Competitions were held throughout the States. In Michigan, the Governor’s Cup was presented to the winner. The LPD team won several trophies for expert shooting. Over the years other teams were organized and also placed high in competitions. LPD FIRING RANGE In 1940, a group of officers built a police pistol target range on a donated piece of property on west Willow. Sgt. Ward Rainwater was the Range master. By 1947, officers were required to participate in a minimum of sixteen hours of firearm training each year. Instructions included proper use of revolvers, submachine guns, sawed off shotguns, tear gas guns, and handheld tear gas canisters.
