ONE-WAY RADIO

In 1931, a Western Electric 8A-50 watt transmitter with a 10-mile radius was installed in north Lansing. After receiving a call for assistance at headquarters, the licensed radio dispatcher would broadcast the call over the one-way radio, and repeat it three times. One of the four Lansing patrol cars with a receiver would proceed to the address. Using the nearest telephone or callbox they would acknowledge their arrival at the scene to the dispatcher. Reports showed 1,726 runs were made by radio-equipped cars with a response time in the downtown area of two minutes.
