THE RAKE LADY During the summer of 1975, while on routine patrol, a LPD officer received a report of a woman with a gun in her purse. When he arrived at the scene of the call he found four persons holding a woman. Suddenly, without warning, a young female who had been holding the woman suspect picked up a nearby garden rake and commenced “whacking” the officer with it. The surprised officer quickly subdued the young female and placed her under arrest, but as he walked her back to his patrol car she scratched his face and hit him several times. Other LPD units arrived to assist him. No gun was found in the purse, or possession, of the female that first generated the call and no charges were filed against her. However, a warrant was sought against the “rake lady” for assault of an officer. “Nightwatch” – Officers M.Underhill, R. Middaugh, clerk L.Wesley, and officer B. McClean. Not pictured officers: manager, G. Bleisner, D. Foster, O. Face. Nightwatch, a dedicated, volunteer group brought warm and positive reactions from the public to LPD for three years. Patrol Car 1970s
