CHIEF PAUL TAYLOR

Upon completion of his 30 years of service in 1951, Chief John Early had seen LPD grow from 28 to 140 officers. His goals in crime detection, traffic control, and law enforcement had brought national honors to LPD and personal commendations to Chief Early. In February 1952, 27-year veteran, Chief Paul R. Taylor set his goals for LPD. Taylor was hired in 1924, and after only three hours of instruction was assigned to walk a beat. During his career he worked traffic, the Crow’s nest, and spent twenty years in the detective bureau before being promoted to Inspector and then chief.

The pride of Lansing Police officers for the Badge they wear had a new look in April 1953. The inscription on the new silver oval badge  “Patrolman-Lansing Police,” or appropriate rank, surrounds the seal of the City of Lansing. Each officer’s assigned number appears at the bottom. In 1990, the wording was changed to “Police Officer.”
