CALL BOXES TO WALKIE-TALKIES

Lansing Police Officers used call boxes for over fifty years. In 1963, beat officers began to use the walkie-talkie, a miniature two-way radio. With 1.4 watts of power, the radio had a range of 10 miles, weighed less than two pounds, could attach to an officer’s belt, and gave officers instant contact with the radio dispatcher and patrol cars. By 1967, call boxes were obsolete in Lansing.
